Thomas E. Levy Groundwater Replenishment Facility Coachella Dike #4 Recharge Basins

Contracted By   Coachella Valley Water District
Public Project
Date range work performed 10/08 to 9/09
Location   Coachella Valley / Indio, California

Scope of Work

  • 136 acres of recharge basins
  • 39 basins
  • 7000 LF of 18" to 48" piping
  • Inlets
  • Spillways
  • 11,000 LF of telemetry conduits and water level monitoring stations
  • 3,000 LF of fencing

Unique Aspects

  • Water is pumped to this Replenishment Facility by the Dike #4 Pump Station, (also in the Pump Station section), which was built by TC Construction at the same time. The Pump Station transfers water from the Coachella Canal, (which conveys water from the Colorado River), to the Replenishment Facility located approximately 3/4 mile from the Pump Station.

  • The Pump Station capacity is 60 cfs, which equals 28,000 gpm, while overcoming 80 feet of vertical rise from the Pump Station to the top of the Replenishment Facility.

  • The replenishment facility will percolate 40,000 acre feet of water annually into the eastern Coachella Valley aquifer. This amount of water is approximately what is used each year by 40,000 households. By replenishing the natural aquifer, overdraft of groundwater supplies throughout the eastern valley are alleviated. In 30 years, the groundwater level in the eastern Coachella Valley will be up to 105 feet higher than it would be had CVWD not built this facility.
